A muscle injury, also known as a muscle strain or pull, occurs when muscle fibers are overstretched or torn. This can happen due to acute trauma, overuse, or improper use of the muscle. Muscle injuries can range from mild to severe and are common in both athletes and non-athletes.
Types of Muscle Injuries
1. Contusions:
Caused by a direct blow or impact, leading to muscle bruising.
Example: a soccer player, who collides with another player during a game, receiving a hard impact on the thigh.
2. Cramps:
Sudden, involuntary muscle contractions.
3. Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS):
Muscle pain and stiffness that occur hours to days after unaccustomed or strenuous exercise such as quads, calf, biceps and others muscle group.
4. Strains:
Grade I (Mild): Small number of muscle fibers are damaged.
Grade II (Moderate): More extensive damage with a greater number of muscle fibers involved.
Grade III (Severe): Complete rupture of the muscle or tendon.
5. Common muscle strains:
Hamstring Strain
Quadriceps Muscle Contusion
Calf Strain
Groin Strain
Rotator Cuff Tears
Rupture Long Head Biceps
Achilles Rupture
