Initiative Targets Cost-of-Living Challenges in Major Urban Areas
DENGKIL (June 26) ¡ª Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that the government will develop dedicated housing projects for civil servants with lower rental rates, aimed at easing the financial burden caused by rising housing costs in key urban centres.
Anwar, who also serves as finance minister, said the initiative follows his visits to several states including Penang, Perak, Johor and Negeri Sembilan, where he observed that many civil servants are struggling with increasing rental expenses.
Rising Rents Outpacing Salary Adjustments
The Prime Minister noted that although civil servant salaries have been increased by between 15% and 30%, rental costs in major cities continue to rise at a faster pace, creating affordability challenges.
He highlighted that in areas such as Johor Bahru, Kuala Lumpur, Seremban and Ipoh, the cost of renting housing has become a significant financial strain, even after recent salary adjustments.
This mismatch between income growth and rental inflation has prompted the government to explore targeted housing solutions for public sector employees.
Government to Develop Dedicated Housing Projects
Under the proposed initiative, the government will utilise identified government-owned land to build housing specifically for civil servants, including personnel from various public service sectors such as customs and police.
The housing units will be offered at subsidised or lower rental rates to ensure affordability and reduce cost-of-living pressures on government employees.
Anwar said the objective is to ensure that civil servants are not overburdened by housing expenses and can better manage household financial commitments.
Focus on Speedy Implementation
The Prime Minister emphasised that the government intends to expedite the development process, ensuring that housing projects are implemented as soon as suitable land becomes available.
He added that the initiative reflects the government¡¯s broader commitment to improving the welfare and living conditions of civil servants, particularly those stationed in high-cost urban areas.
