The premium electric vehicle (EV) brand Zeekr, owned by the massive Chinese automaker Geely, has debuted a brand-new lithium-iron phospahate (LFP) battery that was developed internally. It promises to offer "ultra-fast charging," high energy density, and "excellent safety."

Even in colder locations, the business claims that the new batteries "outperforms many competitors" in terms of charging performance. The new LFP battery technology, which will officially debut with the upcoming Zeekr 007 sedan in January 2024, is said to be able to add up to 500 km of range in just 15 minutes of charging thanks to its 800V electrical system, though Geely stopped short of revealing its actual power capacities.





Compared to the nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) chemistry found in the majority of high performance EVs, LFP batteries often have a lower energy density at the cell level. In order to counteract the inherent drawback, Geely engineers created the new LFP batteries with a high energy density at the pack level. They did this by employing "simplified structural design and newly-developed materials" to achieve an overall battery pack volume utilization of 83.7%.






Geely claims that the battery does not sacrifice safety in any way, even with its excellent energy density and charging efficiency. The National Motor Vehicle Quality Inspection and Testing Center in China completed six rigorous safety tests, including a nail piercing test, which the new LFP battery pack passed with flying colors.





In addition to developing new battery technologies, Zeekr claims that it is building up its "ultra-fast charging" network quickly in China. These two initiatives will complement one another to give Zeekr's consumers the greatest EV experience possible. Zeekr has opened 401 of these charging stations so far in China as of the end of November; there are over 2,200 charge points that can provide 360 kW of DC power.




By 2024, the company hopes to have 1,000 stations on its network; by 2026, it plans to have over 10,000 ultra-fast charging ports operational.
