According to a statement from Porsche, its "future vehicle generations" will soon feature Google Maps, Google Assistant, and a number of other apps through the Google Play Store. Production of vehicles equipped with the new entertainment system will start "in the middle of the decade".
The announcement essentially confirms that, like other automakers like Volvo, Ford, and the General Motors group, the next generation of Porsche Communication Manager (PCM) system will be built on the Android Automotive OS (with Google Automotive Services), even though the company does not specifically state this in its press release.
Porsche claims that the new Android-based infotainment system will enable a range of "ecosystems from different providers" to be integrated directly into the vehicle, making PCM "an integral part of the digital ecosystem of Porsche customers worldwide" in addition to providing access to the vast array of apps and Google services available in the cars.
The company claims that the well-known PCM system's user interface will essentially not change even with the move to a new operating system. To maintain the PCM system current, the Android Automotive-based software will also receive frequent over-the-air upgrades.
"Our cars let our customers realize their dreams. Oliver Blume, Chairman of Porsche AG, states, "They want a seamless digital experience in addition to exceptional performance and timeless design." The combination of platforms and apps that users are familiar with from their end devices has produced this blended environment.
Blume continues, stating that Porsche and Google's relationship will be a long-term endeavor. "We have an open approach and are developing innovations with leading technology partners."
