32% increase in issued summons in 2023, with the majority being for technical faults on vehicles
25-Jan-2024
Selangor Road Transport Department (JPJ) reported a 32% rise in issued summonses in 2023 compared to the previous year. They issued 349,289 summons for various offenses, a notable increase from the 263,786 fines in 2022. The majority of summons (111,837) were related to technical faults on vehicles, such as bald tires and faulty signal lights.
Other common offenses included driving without a valid or expired license (30,142) and riding with an expired motorcycle license (17,799). According to Azrin Borhan, the state JPJ director, the uptick in compliance-related offenses may be attributed to drivers neglecting vehicle maintenance. He advised drivers to inspect their vehicles before embarking on any journey. During a recent compliance operation at Puchong Selatan Toll Plaza, 1,217 vehicles were inspected, resulting in 583 summons and the seizure of three vehicles.
