Aaron-Wooi Yik was eliminated by his compatriot at the Arctic Open

12-Oct-2023

In the Arctic Open in Finland, the world No. 4 men's doubles team of Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik were upset by their teammates, Man Wei Chong and Tee Kai Wun in the first round. Despite being the second seed, Aaron and Wooi Yik lost 21-11, 21-18 to Man Wei Chong and Tee Kai Wun in just 26 minutes. This loss came after a busy schedule for Aaron and Wooi Yik, who had been in action in eight of the past 13 weeks, including their bronze medal win at the Hangzhou Asian Games. They also had to withdraw from the Hong Kong Open due to Wooi Yik's illness.

For Aaron and Wooi Yik, the defeat in the Arctic Open may turn out to be a blessing in disguise, as it gives them a chance to rest and prepare for the more important Denmark Open and French Open, both rated as Super 750 events. The Arctic Open is a Super 500 event.

On the other hand, Man Wei Chong and Tee Kai Wun, who have been well-rested, now have an opportunity to address their recent inconsistency. They will face Japan's Yoshinori Takeuchi and Keiichiro Matsui next.

In men's singles, Leong Jun Hao advanced to the last 16, joining Lee Zii Jia and Ng Tze Yong after defeating Joakim Oldorff of Finland. He is set to face Frenchman Arnaud Merkle.

In women's doubles, Anna Cheong and Teoh Mei Xing advanced to the last 16 by beating South Africa's Amy Ackerman and Deidre Laurens. Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah, the third seeds, received a walkover from India's Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand.

Vivian Hoo and Lim Chiew Sien were eliminated by Taiwan's Sung Shuo Yun and Yu Chien Hui in a closely contested match, with a score of 21-17, 21-23, 21-19.
