Dengue, caused by a viral infection with a ribonucleic acid (RNA) virus from the Flaviviridae family, is transmitted through the bites of female mosquitoes, specifically the Aedes aegypti mosquitoes that have previously bitten an infected person.

What are the symptoms of Dengue?
Here are the symptoms to watch for:
- Sudden high fever (40°C/104°F)
- Severe, throbbing headaches
- Pain behind the eyes
- Muscle and joint pain
- Nausea and vomiting
- Swollen glands
- Skin rash
 
Symptoms typically last for 2-7 days (febrile phase), and most people recover from Dengue within a week.
 
In severe cases, symptoms of Dengue include:
- Bleeding from the mouth/gums/nose
- Sticky, wet skin
- Internal bleeding leading to black vomit and stools
- Abdominal pain
- Appearance of small blood spots under the skin
- Weak pulse
 
What to do if you suspect Dengue infection?
Take the following steps for recovery:
1. If you experience symptoms and suspect Dengue, the first thing to do is see a doctor.
2. Your doctor may advise you to rest in bed as much as possible.
3. Your doctor may prescribe paracetamol to help reduce fever and alleviate pain. Reminder: Do not take aspirin and ibuprofen!

When platelets are less than 50×10^9/L, there is a risk of skin and mucous membrane bleeding; less than 20×10^9/L poses a high risk of spontaneous bleeding; and below 10×10^9/L, there is an extremely high risk, even the possibility of life-threatening danger.
