Subacromial Pain Syndrome (SAPS)
Subacromial pain syndrome (SAPS) is a common shoulder condition characterized by pain in the subacromial space, which is the area between the top of the humerus (upper arm bone) and the acromion (the bony prominence on the shoulder blade). This syndrome often results from overuse, inflammation, or structural abnormalities.
Benphysio does provide this service in all our outlets in Oval Damansara, Bangsar, Puchong, KL Ampang, Cheras and Giza KD. We specialized in hands-on physiotherapy to treat the problem.
Causes of subacromial pain syndrome
SAPS can be triggered by various factors, including:
- Repetitive overhead activities: Activities that involve repetitive overhead motion, such as swimming, tennis, and certain occupational tasks, can lead to SAPS.
- Impingement of the rotator cuff: The tendon of the rotator cuff can become compressed in the subacromial space, causing pain and inflammation.
- Bursitis: Inflammation of the bursa, a fluid-filled sac that reduces friction between tissues, can contribute to SAPS.
- Tendonitis: Inflammation of the tendons, especially the supraspinatus tendon, is a common cause of SAPS.
- Anatomical variations: Certain anatomical features, like a curved or hooked acromion, can increase the risk of developing SAPS.
Symptoms of subacromial pain syndrome
Typical symptoms of SPAS include:
- Pain on the front or side of the shoulder
- Pain that worsens with overhead activities or lifting the arm
- Weakness in the shoulder
- Pain that can disrupt sleep, especially when lying on the affected side
Diagnosis and treatment
Diagnosis involves a physical examination and imaging studies such as X-rays or MRI to confirm the presence of SAPS and rule out other conditions. Treatment options include:
- Rest and activity modification: Avoiding activities that aggravate the pain can help reduce symptoms.
- Physiotherapy: A physiotherapist can design an exercise program to strengthen the shoulder muscles and improve flexibility.
- Medication: NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) can help manage pain and inflammation.
- Surgery: If conservative treatments fail, surgical options such as subacromial decompression may be considered to relieve pressure on the rotator cuff tendons.
Prevention tips
- Avoid repetitive overhead activities when possible
- incorporate shoulder strengthening and flexibility exercises into your routine
- Maintain good posture to reduce strain on the shoulder
- Use proper techniques when lifting or performing physical activities.
Conclusion
Subacromial Pain Syndrome is a treatable condition with appropriate management. Early diagnosis and intervention are crucial to prevent chronic pain and functional impairment. If you experience shoulder pain, consult a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan.
