Emergency Power Changeover Testing (ATS) | Pressurization Fan Maintenance by EKG

In a fire emergency, your building’s life-safety fans—Staircase Pressurization and Smoke Spill—are only as reliable as their power source. The Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) is the critical link that detects a utility power failure and "swaps" the fan’s load to the Emergency Generator. In Kuala Lumpur’s high-rise environment, a "lazy" or "stuck" ATS can leave your escape routes filled with smoke even if the fans themselves are in perfect mechanical condition.

As part of a Ventilation Systems Audit, EKG performs rigorous Emergency Power Changeover Testing to ensure your fans bridge the gap between TNB failure and Generator startup without tripping their motor protection.

1. The "Moment of Truth": The 10-Second Window

When the main power drops, there is a critical sequence that must occur:

  • The Voltage Drop Detection: The ATS must sense the loss of phase or voltage sag immediately.

  • The Generator Command: The ATS sends a "Start" signal to the Genset.

  • The Changeover (The "Clack"): Once the generator reaches stable frequency and voltage, the ATS mechanically disconnects from the grid and connects to the emergency bus.

  • The Fan Re-Start: The Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) or Soft-Starter must be programmed to "Auto-Restart" after this power blip. If the VFD stays in "Fault" mode, the fan remains dead.

2. The EKG "Total-Blackout" Testing Protocol

We simulate a real-world power failure to find the "Hidden Faults" in your electrical bypass:

  • Live Load Transfer Test: We don't just test the ATS with a light bulb; we test it while the 75kW Fire Fan is running. This proves the ATS contacts can handle the massive "Inrush Current" during a fast transfer.

  • Phase Rotation Verification: We ensure the Generator's phase sequence matches the TNB grid. If the phases are swapped, your pressurization fans will spin backwards, sucking smoke into the stairs instead of pushing it out.

  • Contact Resistance & Thermal Scan: We use infrared (IR) cameras to check for "Hot Spots" on the ATS terminals. High resistance in a 10-year-old switch can lead to an electrical fire during the heavy load of an emergency.

  • VFD "Ride-Through" Audit: We check the Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) settings. We ensure the "Under-Voltage" protection doesn't permanently lock out the motor during the 5 to 10-second gap before the generator takes over.

3. The Energy & Mechanical Impact: The Cube Law

A "dirty" power transfer with voltage spikes or sags can damage motor windings and VFD capacitors, leading to mechanical friction.

  • Friction Prevention: Repeated "hard starts" caused by poor power quality create internal heat that degrades bearing grease.

  • The Logic: Because of the Cube Law, a motor with healthy, low-friction bearings (protected by clean power transfers) requires less frequency (Hz) to hit its pressure target. Testing the ATS protects the long-term Efficiency ROI of your fan.

4. ATS & Power Changeover Matrix

Test Parameter Target Performance Failure Risk
Transfer Time < 10 seconds Smoke Accumulation in Stairs
Phase Alignment L1-L2-L3 (Matched) Fan Spinning Backwards
Contact Temp < 65^C ATS Meltdown / Fire Risk
Voltage Drop < 10% at Startup VFD Tripping on Under-Voltage
Genset Signal Instant "Dry Contact" Generator Fails to Start

5. Why Trust EKG for Power Changeover Testing?

  • Holistic Mechanical Focus: We bridge the gap between the Electrical (ATS) and the Mechanical (Fan). We ensure the whole "Life Safety Chain" works, not just the switch.

  • BOMBA & FC Readiness: Our testing provides the documented "Success Log" required for your annual Fire Certificate (FC) and Energy Commission (ST) audits.

  • VFD ROI Projection: We ensure your VFDs are tuned to handle power transitions smoothly, preventing expensive "Component Fatigue" and protecting your energy-saving settings.

  • Precision Tools: We use high-speed power quality analyzers to capture the "Millisecond Data" during the transfer, identifying spikes that standard multimeters miss.
