Welding positions describe the different orientations in which a welder performs a weld. Each position affects the technique, difficulty, and final weld quality. The four basic welding positions are:
1. Flat Position (1G/1F)
The weld is done from the top surface. It is the easiest position and provides good control of the molten pool.
2. Horizontal Position (2G/2F)
The weld is made on the side of a joint. Gravity affects the molten metal, so more skill is needed to maintain the weld bead.
3. Vertical Position (3G/3F)
Welding is done upward or downward along a vertical joint. It requires good control to prevent the molten pool from flowing downward.
4. Overhead Position (4G/4F)
The weld is performed from underneath the joint. It is one of the most challenging positions because molten metal can fall due to gravity.
