Metal-sided Building

11-Aug-2025

This is a technical diagram of a metal-sided building, likely a pole barn or shed, showing and labeling the various types of flashing and other trim components used in its construction. These components are essential for protecting the building from weather and sealing joints.

Components of the Roof and Eaves

* Ridge Cap: This is the metal flashing that covers the peak or highest point of the roof where the two sloping sides meet. Its purpose is to prevent water from entering the building at the ridge.

* Valley: This is a long, V-shaped piece of metal used to flash the interior angle where two roof slopes meet. It directs water down the roof.

* Rake and Corner: A specialized trim piece that covers the angled edges of the roof (the rakes) and transitions around corners, providing a clean finish and sealing the edges.

* Gutter: A trough installed along the lower edge of the roof (eave) to collect and carry away rainwater.

* Eave Drip: A flashing piece installed at the edge of the roof that directs water into the gutter and protects the fascia board behind it.

* Drip Cap: A flashing piece, often placed over doors or windows, to divert water away from the opening.

Components of the Walls and Openings

* Sidewall Flashing: This flashing is used to seal the joint where a roof surface meets a vertical wall, like the side of a building.

* Endwall Flashing: Similar to sidewall flashing, this is used to seal the joint where a roof surface meets the end of a wall.

* J-Channel: A trim piece with a J-shaped profile that is used to finish the edges of siding around doors, windows, and other openings.

* Angle Base / Rat Guard: This is an angled flashing piece installed at the bottom of the wall, where it meets the foundation or ground. It protects the base of the wall and can prevent pests like rats from entering the building.

* Inside Corner: A trim piece that covers and seals the inside corners where two walls meet.

* Track Cover: This component is specifically for a "Sliding Door" and covers the top track to protect it from weather and debris.

* Transition Flashing: This type of flashing is used where a roof line or wall changes pitch or direction, such as where a smaller roof overhang attaches to the main building.

The diagram effectively serves as a visual guide to the various trim and flashing pieces required for a metal-clad building to be properly sealed and protected from the elements.
