Many new moms have heard the "horror stories" about Klinik Kesihatan (KK): "You'll be stuck there for the whole day!"

Honestly, the first check-up is indeed the longest, usually taking 3 to 5 hours. Why so long? Because you have to complete checks at several different departments like an obstacle course.

The KK "Obstacle Course" Process

Stage 1: Registration & Urine Test

Upon arrival, hand your Pink Book to the MCH (Maternal & Child Health) counter and get a number. While waiting, you need to collect a urine sample and test it yourself using strips (the nurse will guide you) for protein and sugar, then show the result to the nurse.

Stage 2: Vital Signs

When your turn comes, the nurse will measure your weight, height, and blood pressure.

Note: If you are rushing or nervous and your blood pressure spikes, you might get slapped with a "Yellow Sticker" immediately! Deep breaths!

Stage 3: Blood Test (The Lab)

This is usually the longest wait. You need to queue at the laboratory (Makmal) to draw 2-4 tubes of blood to check blood type, Hemoglobin (Hb), HIV, Syphilis, etc.

Stage 4: Dental Check-up

Yes! Government clinics take pregnancy dental health seriously because gum disease can lead to premature birth. You need to visit the dental department for a check-up (it's free!).

Stage 5: Nurse/Doctor Interview

The final stage. Back to the MCH department to see your assigned Staff Nurse (Jururawat) or Doctor. They will ask detailed questions about family medical history and fill in the endless forms in the Pink Book. If lucky, the doctor might do a quick scan.

5 KK Check-up "Survival Tips"

1. The Earlier, The Better: Clinics open at 7:30 AM. It's recommended to arrive and queue outside by 7:00 AM - 7:15 AM to get the first batch of numbers.
2. Must Eat Breakfast: Unless the nurse specifically said to fast (e.g., for MGTT sugar test), please eat before your first check-up! You will need the energy.
3. Bring "Waiting Essentials": Fully charged phone, power bank, earphones, or even a book.
4. Bring Water and Snacks: The wait is long, and you will get hungry and thirsty. Bring some biscuits or bread.
5. Dress Comfortably: Wear shoes that are easy to take off (for the dentist) and loose clothing (easy access for blood taking and urine test).
