Efficient Motorcycle Chain Care

Efficient Motorcycle Chain Care

The motorcycle chain is an essential component for a motorcycle as it is responsible for transmitting power from the engine to the rear wheel. However, it is exposed to dust, dirt, and moisture, so regular maintenance is necessary to ensure that it functions properly. Proper motorcycle chain care ensures that power is transmitted efficiently and helps extend its lifespan.

Basic Steps to Maintain a Motorcycle Chain

1. Cleaning the Motorcycle Chain

Cleaning your motorcycle chain is the first step in motorcycle chain care to ensure a smooth ride. Clean every 1,000 to 1,500km using a chain cleaner spray and a stiff nylon brush. For best results, use a three-sided brush specifically for chains.
  1. Spray chain cleaner onto the chain and rear sprocket.
  2. Scrub the chain with a brush until the dirt is removed.
  3. Wipe off any remaining dirt with a clean cloth and allow to dry before lubricating the chain.
Warning: Do not clean the chain while the engine is running. Turn the rear wheel manually for safety.

Extra Tip:
The front sprocket is usually closed and collects dirt easily. Clean this area every time you clean the chain for best results.

2. Lubricate the Chain

Proper chain lubrication helps reduce wear and ensures efficient power transmission. Give it a spray of lubricant every 300km and a full lubrication after each cleaning.

How to Lubricatie Chain:
  1. Do it after a ride because a warm chain absorbs lubricant better.
  2. Spray the lubricant on the inside of the chain to prevent it from splashing out.
  3. Focus the spray between the plate and the outside and between the roller and the side plate.

3. Checking Chain Tension

A motorcycle chain needs to have the right amount of slack to ensure it runs smoothly. Check and adjust the chain tension every time you clean it.

Steps:
  1. Place the motorcycle on a side stand or double stand.
  2. Make sure the gear is in neutral.
  3. Measure the chain slack at the midpoint between the front and rear sprockets using a measuring tape.
  4. For road motorcycles, slack is usually between 25mm to 40mm, while for off-road motorcycles it is around 40mm to 60mm.

Chain Tension Adjustment Chain Tension Adjustment

If the chain is too loose, it needs to be adjusted:
  1. Loosen the rear axle clamp nut.
  2. Turn the adjustment bolt on both sides evenly.
  3. Retighten the clamp nut after adjustment is complete.
  4. Remeasure the chain slack to ensure it is within the correct range.
Important Note: Do not overtighen the chain as this may damage other components.

4. Chain Wear Check

Chain wear should be checked every 10,000 km to 12,000. Riding style, such as frequent acceleration, cna accelerate chain wear.
  1. Perform a visual inspection for signs of rust or damage.
  2. Pull the chain at the back of the sprocket. If you can see half a tooth or more, the chain needs to be replaced.
  3. Check the tension along theentire length of the chain for consistency. If the difference is more than 10mm, the chain is worn and needs to be replaced.
With proper care, your motorcycle chain will last longer, providing a smooth and safe ride. Don't neglect regular inspections and maintenance as it will not only save on repair costs, but also improve the performance of your motorcycle.

A well-maintened motorcycle chain is the key to a smooth and trouble-free ride.
