China Agricultural University (CAU) is the origin of modern agricultural higher education in China. Its history can be traced back to 1905, when the College of Agriculture of the Imperial University of Peking was founded.
CAU is a key university directly under the Ministry of Education, included in the national “Project 211” and “Project 985” initiatives, and was selected as a “Double First-Class” university in 2017.
In 2021, nine disciplines of CAU were selected for the second round of “Double First-Class” construction: Biology, Agricultural Engineering, Food Science and Engineering, Crop Science, Agricultural Resources and Environment, Plant Protection, Animal Science, Veterinary Medicine, and Grass Science.
The university currently has 19 colleges, 1 teaching unit, and 1 department, covering nine disciplines: Agriculture, Engineering, Science, Economics, Management, Law, Literature, Art, and Interdisciplinary Studies.
CAU has more than 29,000 full-time students and over 2,000 faculty members, including 814 professors (or researchers) and 1,050 associate professors (or associate researchers). The university operates 20 national-level research platforms, including 11 national key laboratories, 1 national major infrastructure, 1 national engineering laboratory, 2 national engineering technology research centers, 2 national technology innovation centers, and 3 national field observation and research stations.
CAU actively promotes international collaboration and innovation by advancing both “bringing in” and “going global” strategies. As of 2024, CAU has established partnerships with over 260 universities, research institutions, and international organizations from more than 50 countries and regions across Asia, Africa, Latin America, Europe, and North America, signing 497 cooperation agreements.
CAU co-founded the A5 Alliance of World Top Agricultural Universities with Wageningen University (Netherlands), the University of California Davis (USA), Cornell University (USA), and the University of São Paulo (Brazil).
In response to the Belt and Road Initiative, CAU established the College of International Development and Global Agriculture in 2017 as a think tank for South–South Cooperation. In 2018, CAU and 75 universities from 29 countries jointly founded the Belt and Road/South–South Cooperation Agricultural Education, Science and Technology Innovation Alliance (BRSSCAL), under which 11 international joint research centers have been established worldwide.
