Differences Between Static and Dynamic Display for LED Digital Tube Displays

01-Jul-2026

What is static display?
Static display refers to a mode where the digits or characters on the digital tube are displayed independently and remain constant without changing. This method is commonly used for applications requiring stable numerical or character output, such as digital clocks and thermometers.

What is dynamic display?
Dynamic display refers to a mode where the digits or characters on the digital tube change continuously—for example, the colon flashing on a digital clock or the temperature reading updating on a thermometer. This method is common in applications requiring real-time information display, such as timers and electronic scales.

Differences between static and dynamic display
I. Character updating method
1. Dynamic display: Characters are displayed sequentially. By leveraging the human eye's persistence of vision, the digit selection signals (digit codes) are cycled while the corresponding display data is sent via the data lines.
2. Static display: Characters are displayed simultaneously. The digit selection signal remains active, and the displayed content corresponds exactly to the values on the data lines.

II. CPU time consumption
1. Dynamic display: The CPU must continuously scan digit selection signals and send display data, resulting in high CPU time consumption.
2. Static display: Since there is no need to constantly switch digit selection signals, CPU time consumption is low.

III. Hardware resource usage
1. Dynamic display: Consumes fewer hardware resources compared to static display.
2. Static display: Consumes more hardware resources compared to dynamic display.

Advantages of static and dynamic display
Advantages of static display: Stable light source, which is beneficial for eye health; disadvantages include high power consumption and complex circuitry.
Advantages of dynamic display: Simple circuit structure and high power efficiency; disadvantages include greater complexity in drive control—if the lighting cycle is too long or there is significant timing error between cycles, a flickering effect may occur.
