What is a Closed-loop Water Circulation System?

A Closed-loop System is a hydronic circuit where the water is completely sealed from the atmosphere. Unlike an "open" system (like a cooling tower), the water in a closed loop is recirculated indefinitely, meaning the same water moves from the heat source to the heat emitter and back again.

Because the water is not exposed to the air, these systems are highly efficient, require less chemical treatment than open loops, and are the standard for chilled water air conditioning and industrial process cooling. Core Components of a Closed-loop System

A successful closed-loop system relies on the perfect synchronization of several mechanical and electrical components:

1. The Circulation Pump

The "heart" of the system. In a closed loop, the pump doesn't have to "lift" water to a height (gravity is balanced by the falling return water); it only needs to overcome the friction of the pipes and valves.

  • Primary Pumps: Maintain constant flow through the chiller/boiler.

4. Heat Emitters (AHUs & FCUs)

The water travels to Air Handling Units (AHUs) or Fan Coil Units (FCUs), where it absorbs heat from the building air before returning to the chiller to be cooled again.
