Malaysia’s Agriculture Department Plans to Boost Durian Exports to China for 50th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations

Kuala Lumpur, July 14, 2024 — With the demand for durian, often referred to as the “King of Fruits,” growing steadily in recent years, Malaysia’s Agriculture Department is preparing to significantly increase fresh durian exports to China in celebration of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Projected Increase in Durian Exports

Deputy Director of the Agriculture Department, Nor Aishah, announced that the durian export volume is expected to rise to 27,300 tons next year. This increase aims to stimulate durian exports to neighboring markets as well. She revealed that the department is currently awaiting approval from the General Administration of Customs of the People’s Republic of China (GACC) to export fresh durians to China. The Agriculture Department submitted this application to GACC last year and hopes for a swift approval to enhance farmers' incomes and boost national economic development.

Nor Aishah made these remarks during a press conference in Melaka, where she accompanied a GACC inspection team visiting the Kafu Group’s durian eco-park for work guidance. She also noted that Malaysia currently exports durian products, including durian paste and frozen durians, to six countries: China, Canada, South Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong, and the United States. This year, Malaysia's frozen durian export volume is 26,442 tons, with projections to increase to 27,368 tons in 2025.

Kafu Group’s Focus on Durian Industry Chain Development

Kafu Group’s founder, Dato' Huang Zhanglin, emphasized the company’s commitment to developing the entire durian industry chain. The group collaborates with alliance groups and orchard owners to transform the traditional durian model into a shared platform model, aiming to establish the “Durian Triangle” as Malaysia’s primary durian production area. He highlighted that Kafu Group operates its own processing plant, adhering to stringent production processes to ensure product quality and achieving multiple international certifications.

Huang also shared that the group’s philosophy is “Integrity First, Prosper the World,” with the goal of developing a 5,000-acre organic eco-durian orchard to offer more opportunities for people to taste high-quality durians and related products. He emphasized that durian is not just a fruit but also a symbol of culture and friendship, representing the deep ties between China and Malaysia over the past 50 years. Through this visit, Kafu Group aims to pave the way for deeper cooperation between the two countries in the agricultural and food sectors and to promote the unique appeal of Malaysian durian products in the global market.

Looking Ahead

As Malaysia continues to explore the Chinese market and develop the durian industry chain, the country remains dedicated to expanding its international durian market share, fostering agricultural economic growth, and strengthening friendly relations with China.
