Meranti Bakau

Introduction

Meranti Bakau is the Standard Malaysian Name for the wood of Shorea uliginosa (Dipterocarpaceae). It is also known by local names such as Meranti Paya (in error in Peninsular Malaysia), Meranti Tenggelam (Perak), and Seraya Buaya Hantu (Sabah). This wood is mainly derived from Shorea uliginosa, though it can sometimes be confused with Shorea platycarpa (true Meranti Paya). The sapwood is noticeably lighter than the heartwood, which has a light pink to light red-brown shade.

Density & Strength

Meranti Bakau is classified as Light Hardwood with an air-dry density of 595-755 kg/m³. It falls under Strength Group C (SG 4), making it a reliable choice for various structural and interior applications.

Durability & Preservation

• Natural Durability: Moderately durable under exposed conditions.
• Preservative Treatment: Somewhat difficult to treat with preservatives.

Wood Characteristics

• Texture: Coarse but even.
• Grain: Interlocked.
• Machining Properties: Easy to work with, producing a moderately smooth surface.
• Nailing Property: Rated as good.

Drying & Shrinkage

• Air Drying: Seasons fairly quickly with moderate cupping, bowing, and twisting.
  • 13mm thick boards take around 2 months to air dry.
  • 38mm thick boards take approximately 3.5 months.
• Kiln-Drying: Dries fast without degrade (recommended Kiln Schedule H).
• Shrinkage:
  • Radial shrinkage: 1.0%
  • Tangential shrinkage: 2.7%
