Nine tube wells for UMS on March 26

KOTA KINABALU: A total of nine tube wells are slated to begin operation on March 26 to address water supply issues at Universiti Malaysia Sabah.

UMS Vice Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Kasim Mansor said that one tube well is operating, five wells have completed the drilling process and are in the water quality testing phase, and the remaining three are still drilling.

“So far, the contractor is in the process of drilling three wells with a depth of 80 to 120 meters below ground, with each tube well able to generate between 120,000 and 150,000 liters of water per day,” he said after paying a courtesy call on Head of State Tun Juhar Mahiruddin on Wednesday.

“At UMS we need at least three to five million litres of water a day to cover the consumption of 20,000 students and staff,” Kasim said.
“Through these nine tube wells, it will be able to accommodate at least 1.2 million litres of water per day through underground water sources.

“The water supplied from this tube well is solely utilised for cleaning or maintenance needs, particularly in student dormitories, and not for meal preparation.

“It is hoped that this effort will to some extent solve the issue of water problems at UMS while waiting for the distribution of treated water supply by the Water Department at least 3 million litres of water per day in the coming semester,” he said.
