The International Coastal Cleanup® began more than 35 years ago, when communities rallied together with the common goal of collecting and documenting the trash littering their coastline. The movement was catalyzed by the passion and spirit of two committed individuals. Back in 1986, Linda Maraniss moved to Texas from Washington, DC, where she had been working for Ocean Conservancy. She’d been inspired by the work her Ocean Conservancy colleague Kathy O’Hara was doing on a groundbreaking report called Plastics in the Ocean: More than a Litter Problem that would be published the next year.
International Coastal Cleanup Day is an annual event dedicated to cleaning up and preserving the world's coastal and marine environments. It typically takes place on the third Saturday in September each year. This day serves as a global call to action for individuals, communities, and organizations to come together to remove litter and debris from beaches, shorelines, and waterways.
Ocean trash is a serious pollution issue that affects the health of wildlife, people, and local economies. Trash on our shores and in the water increases the destruction and degradation of wildlife, water quality, and and ecosystems. The Beach Cleanup activity saves the lives of marine animals and improves the beach ecosystem. This program helps the participants in fulfilling their CAS and CSR requirement. By doing beach cleanups, we’re giving back to the nature and keeps our beaches clean for a fun time.
The International Coastal Cleanup Day aims to raise awareness about the importance of protecting coastal ecosystems and marine life while also addressing the issue of marine pollution. Participants, including volunteers, environmental organizations, and schools, gather at various coastal locations to collect and document the types and quantities of trash they find. The data collected during these cleanups can help identify sources of pollution and inform policies and initiatives to reduce it.
This event not only has a positive impact on the environment but also promotes environmental stewardship, community engagement, and a sense of responsibility for our planet's oceans and coastlines. It's a global effort to combat marine pollution and protect the fragile ecosystems that depend on healthy coastal environments.
Join us at JCI Sunway Damansara for the "Aborigines (Orang Asli) Beach Cleaning Initiative 2.0" as we come together to support International Coastal Cleanup Day. Our mission is not only to clean up the beautiful shores of Tanjung Sepat Pantai Cunang but also to embrace inclusivity by involving the Orang Asli community in this meaningful endeavor. By doing so, we are not only aligning with UNSDG Goal No 14, "Life below water," but also fostering collaboration and awareness for coastal conservation. Together, we can make a significant impact on our environment and create a cleaner, healthier future for our oceans and marine life. JCI Sunway Damansara Ocean Flagship Project "One Ocean One World".
