Proton Ends Shah Alam Era, Moves Fully to Tanjong Malim
09-Oct-2025
Proton has officially relocated all its manufacturing operations from Shah Alam to Tanjong Malim, Perak, marking the end of an era after nearly 40 years.

The last Proton Saga rolled off the Shah Alam line on September 30, 2025, with about 1,400 staff now based at the Automotive High Tech Valley (AHTV).
The Tanjong Malim plant is now Proton’s main hub for next-generation vehicles, integrating assembly, R&D, and manufacturing under one roof. Operating under Industry 4.0 standards, it features Malaysia’s largest mechanical press and a new engine line producing the 1.5 TGDi engine.

With a capacity of 250,000 units per year, the plant builds the Saga, Persona, X-series SUVs, and S70, and also houses Malaysia’s first dedicated EV assembly facility.
Proton aims to make Tanjong Malim the Geely Group’s right-hand-drive export hub for Southeast Asia while strengthening local vendor networks and component localisation.
