JPJ Investigates Puspakom Staff for Approving Unsafe Vehicles During Inspection

01-Jan-2025

On 30 December 2024, the Road Transport Department (JPJ) conducted a surprise operation across all Puspakom centers nationwide, starting at 9:30 AM. The operation involved 350 officers who were tasked with ensuring that all vehicles inspected at Puspakom adhered to safety standards.

According to JPJ Enforcement Senior Director Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan, the operation was conducted without prior notice to Puspakom, following directives from Transport Minister Anthony Loke. This initiative is part of a phased enforcement strategy: phase one included recent highway roadblocks, while phase two focuses on unannounced inspections at Puspakom facilities.

At Puspakom Wangsa Maju, the operation was joined by Transport Ministry Secretary-General Datuk Jana Santhiran Muniayan and Kuala Lumpur JPJ Director Hamidi Adam. Over a two-hour period, JPJ officers inspected 115 lorries, issued 69 summonses, took action against 29 vehicles, and seized seven vehicles, including five cars and two lorries.

JPJ officers also identified critical safety lapses, such as unsafe retreaded tyres prone to blowouts being approved during inspections at Puspakom. The Transport Ministry has called on Puspakom’s CEO to urgently address these concerns. Additionally, JPJ discovered that an unsafe vehicle had passed inspection at Puspakom Wangsa Maju.

As a result, Puspakom supervisors and staff involved in the inspection process have been summoned to JPJ headquarters for questioning. A formal investigation is now underway, and JPJ has committed to providing updates as the inquiry progresses.
