The government is still deciding if they should provide a subsidy for RON95 petrol?

27-Jun-2024

The government is currently deciding if they should adjust the RON95 petrol subsidy, according to Minister of Economic Affairs Rafizi Ramli. He emphasized that for now, their main focus will remain on making sure the ongoing targeted diesel subsidy is stable and achieves its goals.

Evaluating the RON95 fuel subsidy aims to make sure the country's finances stay strong and prevent waste in distributing the diesel subsidy. This should help control the country's inflation rate.

In a statement during yesterday's State Assembly meeting, Rafizi said, "If changes to the RON95 petrol subsidy happen soon, the government will make sure that affected groups get the help they need."

He also mentioned that the savings from the revised targeted subsidy would be redirected to programs and projects that directly benefit the people's essential needs. This includes enhancing social services, public facilities, education, transportation, and safety initiatives.

Rafizi also guarantees that if there is a sudden increase in fuel prices, the government will conduct a new assessment based on current requirements, involving the Ministry of Finance, Bank Negara, and Ministry of Economy.

"This is to make sure that changes in prices do not become a burden for the people, particularly those with low incomes," he stated.

Currently, the diesel subsidy is distributed in two ways. One is through SKDS 2.0 for companies: logistics vehicles pay RM2.15 per liter, while public transport like school buses and ambulances pay RM1.65 per liter. Fishermen and small farmers get diesel at RM1.65 per liter through the BUDI Madani program, which also provides a monthly RM200 aid.
