Volvo has introduced its inaugural electric MPV, the Volvo EM90, which is currently open for pre-orders exclusively in China. The vehicle's availability in other markets is yet to be confirmed by Volvo. Priced at RMB818,000 (approximately RM528,000) in China, the EM90 shares its base with the Zeekr 009 but incorporates Volvo's distinctive design and safety features. Described by Volvo as "a car designed to offer a space for connection, reflection, and relaxation," the EM90 aims to provide an environment for spending quality time with loved ones, finding tranquility, and enhancing one's life.

Similar to other Volvo models, the EM90 boasts the distinctive Thor's hammer headlights at the front, offering an illuminating welcome. Notably, it introduces Volvo's first illuminated grille, a unique feature among Volvo cars. Inspired by skyscrapers, the EM90 incorporates vertical design elements both at the front and rear.
Renowned for its rear-end designs, Volvo maintains its high design standards with the EM90's larger MPV surface. The iconic vertical Volvo tail lamps have evolved to blend vertical and horizontal elements seamlessly, with the "Volvo" lettering positioned centrally between the tailgate and the light bar.
Wheel options for the EM90 include 19- or 20-inch aero wheels. Additionally, the vehicle boasts a dual-chamber air suspension system and utilizes "silent tires" to enhance its driving experience.
Regarding the crucial electric vehicle specifications, the Volvo EM90 is equipped with a 116-kWh battery pack, delivering an estimated range of up to 738 km (CLTC) on a full charge. While WLTP figures haven't been released yet, they are anticipated to be more conservative. Using DC fast charging, the battery can go from 10% to 80% in less than 30 minutes.
In terms of performance, the EM90 features a single-motor configuration generating 200 kW (equivalent to 272 metric horsepower). This setup allows the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.3 seconds.
The interior of the Volvo EM90 introduces a fresh cabin design approach for the brand. A notable first for Volvo, it showcases a prominent floating 15.4-inch horizontal head unit. The digital instrument cluster, also of the floating design, reflects the EM90's origins in China. Despite the new cabin design, the vehicle retains Volvo's distinctive Crystal gear selector on the center console.
In addition to the innovative cabin layout, the EM90 boasts interior highlights such as a 21-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system, 5G connectivity, a voice assistant, and a 15.6-inch roof-mounted screen catering to rear passengers. Volvo describes the EM90 as a "Scandinavian living room on the move." With seating for six, the second row is fitted with lounge seats, enhancing comfort and relaxation during travel.
The Volvo EM90 upholds Volvo's renowned commitment to safety, incorporating their standard high safety measures. It includes an extensive array of safety and advanced driver assistance systems supported by diverse sensor technologies. The vehicle is constructed with a robust safety cage crafted from various high-strength steels, including boron steel, to effectively mitigate the impact in potential collisions. Additionally, the EM90 boasts double A-pillars to maximize visibility for enhanced safety.
