The Proton 1.6-liter CamPro CFE turbocharged engine is no longer being produced. According to a TikTok video uploaded by the Exora Owners Car Club Malaysia, which depicts the final engine units leaving the automaker's production line, this is the case.
Proton's first in-house turbocharged engine is the 1.6-liter 4-cylinder CamPro CFE, also known as the Charged Fuel Efficiency engine. In 2008, it made its debut, powering the brand-new Proton Exora Bold at the time. In case you were unaware, Proton will also discontinue the Exora MPV at the end of this year.
Other retired Proton vehicles, like the Prevé and its hatchback brother, the Suprima S, were also powered by the CamPro CFE engine in addition to the Proton Exora. The engine generates a combined 138 horsepower and 205 Nm when mated with the Punch CVT transmission, which is supplied from Belgium.
The Proton Persona, Iriz, and Saga, all of which are still on sale today, are still propelled by Proton's naturally aspirated 1.3-liter and 1.6-liter CamPro VVT (stands for variable valve timing) engines, so we're not quite saying goodbye to the CamPro engine family just yet.
How much longer will the CamPro VVT engine last is the last remaining query. Since the CamPro engine's research and development were completed in 2021, only Proton is aware of the solution.
Proton has produced numerous variants and versions of the Campro engine that previously powered a number of its models until the more recent CamPro CFE and CamPro VVT engines were developed. This applies to the CamPro CPS (stands for cam profile switching), IAFM and IAFM+ engines, as well as the CamPro CPS.
The Geely-sourced 1.5-liter TGDi 3-cylinder engine, which powers a number of Proton models, including the Proton X50 and X70 SUVs, is currently also put together by Proton. Even though the larger Proton X90 has a larger engine and a belt starter generator, it is hybridized.
