Malaysia aims to have 10,000 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in place by 2025, as detailed in the Low Carbon Mobility Blueprint (LCMB) 2021-2030, with 9,000 of these being alternating current (AC) chargers and the remaining being direct current (DC) fast chargers.
The country currently has 1,246 operational public charging stations, as highlighted by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim yesterday, when he reiterated the government's commitment to developing EV charging infrastructure and having 10,000 charging points in place by 2025.
At the recent EVM Asia Expo in Kuala Lumpur, a national EV charging station dashboard visualization provided a basic overview of the country's current public charging network from a topographical viewpoint, as well as the network's current composition.
There are 1,007 AC charging stations and 239 DC fast charging stations among the 1,246 available stations. 500 are interior charging stations, while 746 are outside. Given the objective figure, it's a simple equation in terms of percentage, with infrastructure development now standing at 12.46%.
Will Malaysia meet its objective of 10,000 public charging stations by 2025? Given that 2025 isn't far away, and with 87% of the network still to be built, it may seem like a stretch, but the government's vow to allow charge point operators (CPOs) to gain faster clearances for installation may bring us to the tape in time, hopefully.
