EFB Pellet/Briquette Production Line: More Complex Than It Appears

Setting up an EFB (Empty Fruit Bunch) pellet or briquette production line is not as simple as it may seem. Many investors make the mistake of purchasing machinery without fully understanding or having experience with the unique characteristics of EFB.
Often, small EFB samples are sent to a supplier’s pilot plant for pelletizing or briquetting trials. While the results at this small scale may appear promising, they do not guarantee reliable performance under continuous, full-scale operation. In fact, many production issues arise not from the pelletizer or briquetting machine itself, but from inadequate pre-handling, especially during drying and size reduction.
EFB is one of the most challenging biomass feedstocks to process due to its:

• Loose and bulky structure
• Oily residue
• High moisture content
• High tensile strength

Overlooking any of these critical factors can lead to serious operational issues—ranging from equipment blockages and mechanical failures to inconsistent pellet quality. Without proper pre-treatment, system design, and process control, achieving stable and efficient production is unlikely.
