Chloride Content Test
The Chloride Content Test measures the content of chlorides in fine or coarse aggregates. This test, performed in accordance with ASTM C1218 or BS 812-117, is critical because chlorides are aggressive agents that can speed up the corrosion of embedded steel reinforcement in concrete. Even modest levels of chloride can cause long-term durability difficulties, such as rebar degradation and spalling. This test is especially critical for aggregates derived from coastal, salty, or previously polluted settings. Engineers can verify compliance with specification limits by recognizing and measuring chloride levels, as well as prevent buildings from costly corrosion-related damage and reduced service life.
Advantages of Chloride Content Test:
- Prevents chloride-induced corrosion of reinforced concrete.
- Ensures durability in harsh settings.
- Enhances quality assurance for maritime or coastal projects.
- Helps to maintain compliance with industry requirements.
- Protects against structural deterioration and safety hazards.
