How to Carry a Sick/Stroke Patient on the Bed Safely - Benphysio Sdn Bhd

How to Carry a Sick/Stroke Patient on the Bed Without Hurting Your Back

Safe Lifting and Positioning Tips for Caregivers

Caring for a loved one who is sick or recovering from a stroke often involves helping them move in bed. While this is an act of love and responsibility, if done incorrectly, it can strain your back and lead to injuries over time. With the right techniques, you can protect your spine while ensuring the comfort and safety of the patient.

1. Put One Knee on the Bed

Before helping the patient, place one knee on the bed. This reduces strain on your lower back and gives you better stability.

Tip: Keep your movements slow and controlled to avoid jerking your spine.

2. Adjust Bed Height to Hip Level

If the bed is adjustable, raise it so that the surface is around your hip level. This prevents awkward bending and keeps your posture neutral.

Tip: If no hospital bed is available, use risers or supports to bring the bed closer to hip height.

3. Engage Your Core Muscles

Before lifting or pulling, gently tighten your stomach muscles. Think of it as bracing your body for support. This stabilizes your spine and protects against sudden strain.

4. Avoid Twisting Your Spine — Pivot from Your Hips

When moving a patient, twisting your spine can overload your back. Instead, pivot from your hips and move your feet in the direction you want to turn. This keeps your spine neutral and safe.

Tip: Think “turn with your hips, not with your waist.”

5. Use Sheets or Slide Aids

Transferring a patient is much easier with the right tools. A slide sheet, draw sheet, or even a large bedsheet placed under the patient can reduce friction and help you reposition them without heavy lifting.

Tip: Always pull the sheet toward you with both hands, keeping your elbows close to your body for strength.

6. Work as a Team When Possible

If another caregiver or family member is available, don’t hesitate to ask for help. Two people can share the weight and reduce the risk of injury to both caregiver and patient.

7. Care for Your Own Back

Just like the patient needs ongoing care, so do you. Stretch regularly, strengthen your core and back muscles, and rest when needed. A healthy caregiver can provide better care.

Final Thoughts
Helping a sick or stroke patient in bed is a demanding task, both physically and emotionally. By bending your knees, avoiding twisting, and using aids like sheets, you can protect your spine while ensuring your loved one stays safe and comfortable. Remember — taking care of yourself is part of taking care of them.
