Differential Pressure Sensor Calibration | Pressurization Fan Maintenance by EKG

In a high-rise staircase pressurization or smoke spill system, the Differential Pressure (DP) Sensor is the "brain" of the operation. It tells the Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) how fast to spin to maintain the life-saving 50 Pa (Pascals) of pressure required by BOMBA. In Kuala Lumpur’s humid climate, these sensors often suffer from "drift" or tube blockages, leading to fans that either under-pressurize (allowing smoke in) or over-pressurize (making exit doors impossible to open).

As part of a Ventilation Systems Audit, EKG performs precision calibration to ensure your safety fans respond with surgical accuracy during a fire.

1. The Critical Role of the DP Sensor

The DP sensor measures the difference between the "Safe Zone" (stairwell) and the "Fire Zone" (lobby/corridor).

  • The Over-Pressurization Risk: If a sensor drifts and reads "low," the VFD will ramp the fan to 100%. This can create over 100 Pa of pressure, making it physically impossible for a child or elderly person to pull open the escape door.

  • The Under-Pressurization Risk: If the sensor reads "high," the fan stays at a low speed, allowing toxic smoke to leak into the staircase during an evacuation.

  • Tube Condensation: In KL, the small plastic sensing tubes often collect "sweat" (condensation). A single drop of water in the tube can cause the sensor to give a false reading, tripping the system.

2. The EKG "Precision-Zero" Calibration Protocol

We use laboratory-grade pressure calibrators to re-align your sensors to 2026 safety standards:

  • Zero-Point Calibration: We vent both sides of the sensor to the atmosphere to ensure it reads exactly 0.00 Pa. Many sensors "drift" over time, starting at 5 or 10 Pa even when the fan is off.

  • Multi-Point Span Verification: We apply a known pressure (e.g., 25, 50, and 75 Pa) using a hand pump and a digital master gauge. We adjust the sensor output until it matches the master gauge within a 1% margin of error.

  • Pneumatic Line Purging: We blow out the sensing lines to remove dust, moisture, or insects that might be obstructing the pressure signal.

  • VFD PID Tuning: Calibration isn't just about the sensor; it's about the response. We audit the Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) "PID Loop" to ensure the fan ramps up smoothly without "hunting" or overshooting the target pressure.

3. The Energy & Mechanical Impact: The Cube Law

A miscalibrated sensor wastes massive amounts of energy during testing and "Purge" cycles.

  • Avoiding "Full-Speed" Waste: If a sensor is drifted by just 10 Pa, the fan might run 15% faster than necessary.

  • The Logic: Because of the Cube Law, a 20 percent reduction in fan speed (achieved by accurate sensor feedback) results in a nearly 50 percent reduction in power consumption. Calibration ensures you only use the exact "Hz" required to stay safe.

4. Sensor Health & Compliance Matrix

Condition Observation Resulting Risk
Calibrated Matches Master Gauge (+/- 2 Pa) BOMBA Compliant / Safe Exit
Positive Drift Reads 10 Pa when fan is OFF Under-Pressurization (Smoke Leak)
Negative Drift Reads -5 Pa when fan is OFF Over-Pressurization (Stuck Doors)
Blocked Tube Zero movement when fan starts System Fault / VFD Trip
Moisture in Line "Jumping" or unstable readings Fan Hunting / Motor Wear

5. Why Trust EKG for Sensor Calibration?

  • Certified Test Reports: We provide a "Calibration Certificate" for every sensor, documenting the Before/After readings for your annual Fire Certificate (FC) audit.

  • Mechanical Restoration Path: If the sensor is healthy but the pressure is still low, we are experts in Mechanical Fan Overhauls, offering belt tensioning and impeller cleaning to restore the "muscle" behind the sensor.

  • VFD ROI Projection: We calculate the energy saved by eliminating "Over-Pressurization" cycles, showing you the Ringgit impact of a tuned system.

  • High-Rise Specialist: we understand the "Stack Effect" in KL towers and calibrate your sensors to account for the natural pressure changes between the ground floor and the roof.
