Air Scrubber CFM Capacity Testing | 2024–2026 Performance Standards

In 2026, CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute) Capacity Testing is the definitive method for verifying that an Air Scrubber or Negative Air Machine is actually providing the Air Changes per Hour (ACH) required by DOSH ICOP IAQ 2026 and MOH (Ministry of Health) guidelines.

At EKG M&E, we utilize 34 years of engineering depth to ensure that "Nominal" factory ratings (which often assume no filters are installed) translate into "Actual" delivered airflow in your specific Malaysian job site.

1. Nominal vs. Actual CFM: The Static Pressure Gap

A common mistake in industrial air scrubbing is relying on the manufacturer's "Free Air" rating.

  • The Resistance Penalty: A high-capacity H14 HEPA filter and a G4 pre-filter create significant resistance. A unit rated at 2,000 CFM "Free Air" might only deliver 1,200 CFM once the filters are loaded with dust.

  • Testing Frequency: Under 2026 standards for asbestos abatement or mold remediation, CFM verification is required at the start of the project and every 30 days thereafter to ensure the motor is compensating for filter loading.

2. Testing Methodology: Traverse & Pitot Tube

To satisfy a DOSH 2026 audit, we use high-precision instrumentation to map the air "piston" exiting the machine:

  • Velocity Matrix: We use a Thermal (Hot-Wire) Anemometer to take multiple readings across a grid (traverse) at the exhaust duct.

  • The Formula: We calculate the average velocity in feet per minute (FPM) and multiply it by the duct's cross-sectional area in square feet to arrive at the True CFM.

  • Ducting Loss: If your scrubber is ducted 50 feet out a window, the friction "static loss" will drop your CFM. We test at the end of the discharge hose to ensure the workspace is actually being cleared of contaminants.

3. VFD Optimization & The Cube Law

Under the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act (EECA) 2026, running a scrubber at full blast when it isn't needed is a compliance violation.

  • Constant Volume Control: Modern 2026 scrubbers use Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) linked to airflow sensors. If the CFM drops due to a dirty filter, the VFD automatically ramps up the motor to maintain the set CFM.

  • The Cube Law Advantage: Following the Cube Law, if a small room only needs 500 CFM but you have a 1,000 CFM unit, we use the VFD to halve the speed. This doesn't just save 50% energy—it slashes power consumption by nearly 80%. This is critical for sites running on limited temporary power.

4. Mechanical Health: FFT Vibration Analysis

High-capacity blowers in mobile scrubbers are subject to significant wear and tear.

  • Imbalance Detection: We use Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) analysis during CFM testing. If a blower is vibrating excessively, it creates "Air Churn" (turbulence) which lowers the CFM and can lead to motor failure.

  • Resonance Protection: We program the scrubber's internal VFD to "skip" harmonic frequencies identified during the FFT audit, ensuring the unit runs quiet and stable during 24/7 remediation cycles.

Why Trust EKG M&E for CFM Validation?

  • 34 Years of Engineering Depth: Based in KL, we have the specialized tools to validate portable and stationary scrubbing systems across Malaysia.

  • Audit-Ready Documentation: We provide the CFM Verification Certificate and ACH Calculation Report required for your 2026 site safety file.

  • Total Compliance: We don't just measure; we recalibrate your VFD on-site to ensure you hit your safety and energy targets.
