Rack Cooling Systems by EKG M&E Sdn Bhd

In high-density data centers across Kuala Lumpur, the challenge has shifted from cooling a room to cooling a specific Rack. As rack power densities move from $5\text{kW}$ to $30\text{kW}+$, traditional perimeter cooling (CRAC) often fails to push enough cold air to the top of the rack. Rack-level cooling solves this by bringing the cooling source inches away from the IT equipment, eliminating "Hot Spots" and drastically reducing energy waste.

EKG M&E Sdn Bhd specializes in the design, installation, and 24/7 maintenance of close-coupled rack cooling solutions, ensuring your high-performance hardware stays within the ASHRAE TC 9.9 thermal envelope.

1. Close-Coupled Cooling Architectures

As an HVAC and Clean Air Specialist, we deploy three primary rack-based cooling strategies depending on your facility's infrastructure:

A. In-Row Cooling Units

These units are placed directly between server racks within a row.

  • Mechanism: They capture hot exhaust air from the rear aisle, cool it, and discharge it directly into the cold aisle.

  • Benefit: Eliminates the need for high-pressure raised floors and allows for a "pay-as-you-grow" modular expansion.

B. Rear Door Heat Exchangers (RDHx)

A chilled water or refrigerant coil is mounted as the actual back door of the server rack.

  • Mechanism: Server fans push hot air through the coil; the air is neutralized to room temperature (or cooler) before it even exits the rack.

  • Benefit: Can handle extremely high densities (50kW+ per rack) without requiring aisle containment.

C. Top-of-Rack (ToR) Cooling

Self-contained cooling modules that sit on top of a standard 19-inch rack.

  • Mechanism: They pull hot air from the rear plenum and blow chilled air down into the front of the servers.

  • Benefit: Ideal for retrofitting "Hot Spot" areas in an existing data center without moving racks.

2. Efficiency through VFDs and EC Fans

The "intelligence" of a rack cooling system lies in its ability to match the server load in real-time. We utilize Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) and Electronically Commutated (EC) fans to drive down your PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness):

  • Dynamic Fan Speed: The VFD adjusts the cooling fan RPM based on the temperature difference ($\Delta T$) across the rack. If the server CPU load drops, the cooling fan slows down instantly.

  • Energy Savings: Reducing fan speed by just 20% can reduce fan power consumption by nearly 50% due to the Affinity Laws of fluid dynamics.

  • Soft Starts: VFDs prevent electrical "inrush" current spikes, protecting your rack-level PDU (Power Distribution Unit) and UPS systems.

3. Critical Protection: Leak Detection & Monitoring

Because rack cooling brings liquids (refrigerant or water) close to expensive IT hardware, we implement rigorous safety protocols:

Feature Technical Execution EKG M&E Standard
Leak Detection Moisture-sensing "rope" sensors at the rack base. Instant shut-off of solenoid valves on alarm.
Condensate Pump Integrated high-lift pumps. Redundant drainage to prevent tray overflow.
Vibration Analysis FFT Spectrum Analysis on unit fans. Ensures no mechanical resonance affects HDDs.
BMS Integration SNMP or Modbus communication. Real-time rack-level temperature alerts.

4. Why Choose EKG M&E Sdn Bhd?

  • 34-Year Legacy in KL: We have managed complex thermal migrations for Malaysia's leading banks and telecommunications providers.

  • Turnkey MEP Execution: From the Chilled Water Piping and Copper Ref-piping to the VFD control panels, we manage the entire project "live" without IT downtime.

  • Sustainability Focus: We help you meet the 2026 MITI Sustainability Guidelines by optimizing your cooling-to-IT power ratio.
