Explosion Proof Fans by EKG M&E Sdn Bhd
In the high-risk industrial corridors of Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, "Explosion Proof" (Ex) fans are the primary line of defense against catastrophic ignition. Whether in a chemical refinery, a pharmaceutical lab, or a commercial paint booth, these fans are engineered to operate in atmospheres containing flammable gases, vapors, or combustible dust without becoming the source of a spark or fire.
EKG M&E Sdn Bhd provides specialized engineering and maintenance for Ex-rated ventilation, ensuring your facility complies with JKKP (DOSH) LEV regulations and international safety standards.
1. The Engineering of "Non-Sparking" Construction
Technically, a fan itself cannot be "explosion-proof" (meaning it cannot withstand an external explosion); instead, it is built with Spark Resistant Construction (SRC) to prevent an internal ignition. Following AMCA 99-0401 standards, we provide three levels of protection:
-
Type A (Highest Protection): All parts of the fan in contact with the airstream are made of non-ferrous materials (usually aluminum). This eliminates the possibility of any metal-to-metal sparking.
-
Type B (Medium Protection): Features a non-ferrous impeller (fan blade) and a non-ferrous "rub ring" around the shaft entry point. Even if the shaft shifts, it will not strike a ferrous (spark-capable) surface.
-
Type C (Standard Protection): Designed so that any shift of the wheel or shaft will not allow two ferrous parts to rub or strike each other.
2. Hazardous Zone Classification (ATEX & IECEx)
As an HVAC and Clean Air Specialist, we match the fan's certification to your specific site risk. Most Malaysian industrial sites follow the Zone classification system:
| Zone | Hazard Presence | Required Equipment Rating |
| Zone 0 / 20 | Continuous (e.g., inside a fuel tank). | Category 1 (Ex ia / Intrinsically Safe) |
| Zone 1 / 21 | Likely in normal operation. | Category 2 (Ex d / Flameproof) |
| Zone 2 / 22 | Unlikely / short periods only. | Category 3 (Ex nA / Non-Sparking) |
3. Critical Maintenance for Ex-Fans
Maintaining an explosion-proof fan is a specialized life-safety task. A standard service is insufficient because it may overlook the "Ex" integrity of the unit:
-
Flame Path Inspection: For "Ex d" (Flameproof) motors, we verify that the precisely machined gaps (flame paths) are free of corrosion or paint, ensuring they can still cool escaping gases during an internal failure.
-
Tip Clearance Verification: We measure the gap between the blade tip and the fan housing. If the gap narrows due to bearing wear or Vibration, the resulting friction can exceed the fan's Temperature Class (T-Rating).
-
Earth Continuity Testing: We ensure the rotating assembly is electrically bonded to the ground. If the bond is broken, the fan can build up a static charge, resulting in a high-energy spark discharge.
4. VFD Integration and Safety Interlocks
To maximize energy efficiency without compromising safety, we integrate Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs):
-
Soft-Start Protection: VFDs eliminate the "Inrush Current" and torque spikes that can cause belts to slip and generate friction heat during startup.
-
Safety Interlocks: We link the fan to Gas Detectors. If hazardous concentrations are detected, the VFD can automatically ramp the fan to emergency exhaust speeds to dilute the atmosphere.
