Calculating the Air Change Rate (ACH) is the foundational M&E step for any warehouse project in Kuala Lumpur or Selangor. It determines how many times the entire volume of air within the facility is replaced with fresh, outside air every hour.
At EKG M&E Sdn Bhd, we use these calculations to size your High-Volume Ventilation assets, ensuring your facility remains DOSH (JKKP) compliant while optimizing your TNB electricity costs.
1. The Fundamental ACH Formula
To calculate the required airflow for your warehouse, we use the following relationship:
Where:
-
Q: The airflow rate of your fans, measured in Cubic Meters per Minute (CMM).
-
V: The total interior Volume of the warehouse (Length x Width x Height) in cubic meters (m^3)
-
60: The multiplier to convert minutes to one hour.
Note: If your fan is rated in CMH (Cubic Meters per Hour), the formula simplifies to: $ACH = \frac$.
2. Step-by-Step Calculation Guide
Step A: Calculate Building Volume (V)
Measure the internal dimensions.
-
Pro Tip: Do not forget the "Apex Height" if you have a sloped roof. For an accurate V, calculate the rectangular base plus the triangular prism of the roof space.
Step B: Determine Target ACH
The "Target ACH" depends on the heat load and usage of the warehouse:
| Warehouse Type | Recommended ACH |
| Standard Storage (Ambient) | 2 – 4 |
| High-Traffic Loading Bays | 4 – 6 |
| Manufacturing / Assembly | 6 – 10 |
| High-Heat / Chemical Storage | 10 – 15+ |
Step C: Calculate Required Fan Capacity (Q)
Once you have your Volume and Target ACH, rearrange the formula:
3. Engineering for "Real World" Performance
As an HVAC and Clean Air Specialist, we look beyond the basic math to ensure the air actually moves effectively.
-
Static Pressure (Ps): Filters, louvers, and long duct runs create resistance. If your fans aren't sized to overcome this pressure, your actual ACH will be much lower than the "catalog" rating.
-
Short-Circuiting: If your Fresh Air Intakes are too close to your exhaust fans, the air "short-circuits." The fans will move air, but the middle of the warehouse remains a stagnant "Dead Zone."
-
Positive Pressure Management: We calibrate the ACH to ensure the warehouse remains at a slight Positive Pressure. This prevents KL street dust and humidity from being sucked in through loading doors.
Why Choose EKG M&E Sdn Bhd?
-
Professional Commissioning: We don't just guess. We use calibrated anemometers to perform a Duct Traverse and "Airflow Mapping" to prove your facility is hitting its design ACH.
-
VFD Optimization: By utilizing Variable Frequency Drives, we allow you to drop the ACH during night shifts or rainy days, saving significantly on TNB electricity bills.
-
Strategic Support: Based in Kuala Lumpur, we provide turnkey design and scheduled maintenance for logistics hubs and manufacturing plants.
