Fire Alarm Signal Interface Testing | Pressurization Fan Maintenance by EKG

In a high-rise fire, the most powerful fan in the world is useless if it doesn't receive the "Start" command. The Fire Alarm Signal Interface is the digital and electrical bridge between your building's Fire Alarm Control Panel (FACP) and the Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) or motor starter of your life-safety fans. In Kuala Lumpur’s complex commercial towers, these signals often fail due to corroded relays, "open-loop" wiring, or bypassed control logic.

As part of a Ventilation Systems Audit, EKG performs rigorous interface testing to ensure your staircase pressurization and smoke spill fans trigger instantly when a smoke detector or manual call point is activated.

1. The "Signal Chain" of Life Safety

The interface must work across multiple systems to be effective:

  • The Trigger: A smoke detector or heat sensor sends a signal to the FACP.

  • The Relay Output: The FACP triggers a "Dry Contact" or a 24V signal at the fan control panel.

  • The VFD "Fire Mode" Activation: The Fan Control Panel tells the VFD to bypass all comfort settings and ramp to its "Safety Speed" (e.g., 45Hz to 50Hz).

  • The Damper Interlock: The signal must also open the Motorized Fresh Air Dampers. If the fan starts before the damper is 100% open, it can "implode" the ductwork due to massive negative pressure.

2. The EKG "End-to-End" Interface Protocol

We don't just "jump" the terminals; we test the entire logic path:

  • Trigger-to-Torque Latency: We measure the seconds between the alarm activation and the fan hitting its target RPM. BOMBA standards typically require full pressurization within 60 seconds.

  • "Open-Circuit" Monitoring: We test the supervised wiring. If a wire vibrates loose, the FACP should show a "Fault" immediately, rather than staying silent until a real fire occurs.

  • VFD Override Validation: We verify that the Fire Signal takes "Priority One." Even if the Building Management System (BMS) has turned the fan "OFF" for energy saving, the Fire Signal must force it "ON."

  • Status Feedback Audit: We check the "Run/Trip" feedback. The FACP must accurately show if the fan is actually spinning, not just that the signal was sent.

3. The Energy & Mechanical Impact: The Cube Law

A "glitchy" interface that causes the fan to "hunt" or cycle on and off creates massive mechanical and electrical stress.

  • Soft-Start Optimization: A clean signal through a tuned VFD prevents "Across-the-Line" starting shocks that damage bearings and belts.

  • The Logic: Because of the Cube Law, a fan that is signaled to run at its exact safety frequency (e.g., 42Hz instead of a generic 50Hz) via a calibrated interface reduces the electrical load on the emergency generator by up to 40%.

4. Signal Interface Performance Matrix

Component Healthy Status Failure Risk
Relay Contact < 0.5 Ohms Resistance Intermittent Start / Failure to Trigger
Signal Voltage Stable 24VDC (or Dry) Signal "Noise" causing VFD Faults
Logic Priority Fire Signal Overrides BMS Fan stays OFF during Emergency
Response Time < 5 Seconds (Logic) Delayed Smoke Management
Supervision Fault alert on wire break "Silent" System Failure

5. Why Trust EKG for Interface Testing?

  • Holistic Mechanical Focus: We bridge the gap between the "Alarm Guy" and the "Fan Guy." We ensure the mechanical output matches the digital input.

  • BOMBA Compliance: Our testing provides the "Form G" documentation required for your annual Fire Certificate (FC) renewal in Malaysia.

  • VFD ROI Projection: We ensure your interface is set up for "Precision Pressurization," allowing your VFD to save energy during monthly tests while maintaining 100% safety.

  • 2026 Technical Standards: We use high-speed data loggers to capture signal "glitches" that standard multimeters are too slow to see.
