Impulse Jet Fan System Design by EKG M & E Sdn Bhd

In the modern architectural landscape of KL and PJ, traditional ducted car park ventilation is rapidly being replaced by Impulse Jet Fan Systems. This design philosophy utilizes high-velocity air "slugs" to move large volumes of air through a basement, eliminating the need for bulky overhead ductwork. EKG M & E Sdn Bhd specializes in the precision engineering and placement of these induction systems to ensure peak air quality and BOMBA-certified smoke extraction.


Core Principles of Impulse Design

  • The Induction Effect (Entrainment)

    A small volume of air is discharged at high velocity (approx. 20m/s to 30m/s) from the jet fan. This high-speed stream "pulls" the surrounding stagnant air along with it. A single jet fan can move up to 10–15 times its own primary airflow through this induction process.

  • Longitudinal Airflow Strategy

    We design the system to create a "virtual duct." Fans are strategically spaced so that the "throw" of one fan reaches the intake of the next. This pushes vehicle exhaust (CO) and heat consistently toward the main extract shafts located at the perimeter of the car park.

  • Elimination of "Dead Zones"

    Traditional ducts often leave corners with stagnant air. Jet fans are highly directional; we angle them to sweep air around columns, ramps, and storage areas, ensuring a uniform distribution of fresh air throughout the basement level.


Key Design Parameters

  • Thrust and "Throw" Calculation

    We calculate the required Newton (N) thrust based on the basement's cross-sectional area and the resistance created by structural beams. A typical jet fan provides between 25N to 100N of thrust, determining how far the air will travel before losing velocity.

  • Air Changes Per Hour (ACH)

    As per UBBL, we design for two distinct modes:

    • General Ventilation: 6 ACH to manage carbon monoxide.

    • Smoke Spill Mode: 10 ACH to clear the basement during a fire.

  • Support for Low Headroom

    In KL developments where every centimeter of height counts, impulse systems are a game-changer. By removing ducts, we increase the usable height for tall vehicles (SUVs/Vans) and simplify the installation of other M&E services like sprinklers and cable trays.


Technical Implementation

  • CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) Validation

    We don't guess—we simulate. Every impulse design is run through CFD software to visualize smoke movement and CO decay rates. This ensures the system will pass BOMBA "Cold Smoke" testing before the first fan is even mounted.

  • VFD & Sensor Integration

    Our designs feature Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs). The fans run at a quiet "trickle" speed most of the day, only ramping up when $CO$ sensors detect peak traffic or when the fire alarm is triggered.

  • Acoustic Mitigation

    High-velocity fans can be noisy. We integrate inlet and outlet silencers and perform decibel (dB) mapping to ensure the system meets local council noise requirements for residential or office occupants above.
