Pork prices may rise again at the end of June, expected to rise by RM1 per kilogram

Published on 20 June 2022 at 16:41

(Kuala Lumpur, June 20) The price of live pigs has been rising over the past six months. It is rumored that the price of pork will rise again at the end of June this year. Market vendors predict that fresh pork will rise by RM1 per kilogram!

Since the Chinese New Year, the price of local live pigs has been rising continuously, especially after the outbreak of African swine fever around the world, the price of local pigs has been adjusted all the way, and the price has only risen and not fallen.

Pork vendors told reporters that even if pork is imported from foreign countries, it will not ease the trend of rising pork prices in the market, because customers trust local farms more. However, vendors predict that pork prices may stabilize by August this year.

Mr. Liang, a pork vendor at Klang Central Market, confirmed in an interview with Oriental Daily that pork vendors have been notified that prices will rise again at the end of June, and this round of pork price increase is RM1 per kilogram.

“There is actually no shortage of pork in the market, and the supply of pork is greater than the demand of the people. However, I still don’t understand why the price of live pigs is still rising.”

At the same time, when asked, Huang Jiliang, a director of the Selangor and Kuala Lumpur Slaughterers Association, said that the Slaughterers Association has always strongly opposed price increases, and the new round of price increases is still under discussion.

“Pig farm operators disclosed the price increase to slaughter operators two weeks ago and asked both parties to hold a meeting. However, the slaughter industry association held a meeting to discuss the matter this week. ”

He admitted that the price of live pigs continued to rise because of the severe shortage of live pigs caused by the outbreak of swine fever in some farms, and the strict control by the Veterinary Department, which has prevented these farms from resuming normal operations so far.

He added that Malaysia is still importing pork from foreign countries, so although there is no shortage of pork in the local market, local customers, including catering operators, only trust fresh pork produced by local farms.

On the other hand, Pan Guoquan, the complaints director of the Klang Valley Hawkers Association, said that starting from July, not only will the price of pork increase, but all processed foods will also announce price increases.

He said that there is actually no shortage of pork supply in the market, but vendors must pay a better price to buy (pork), which is why the price of fresh pork has been soaring.

“Some wholesale markets still allow you to buy fresh ingredients because the operators have signed contracts with suppliers. Generally, the price of pork in supermarkets and wholesale markets is cheaper than in wet markets. ”

He added that the price of frozen pork generally does not soar, but many people are worried that frozen pork will not be fresh enough.
