Thaipusam is a Hindu festival celebrated primarily by the Tamil community, especially in India, Malaysia, Singapore, and Sri Lanka. It honors Lord Murugan, the Hindu god of war, and marks the day when his mother, Goddess Parvati, gave him the divine Vel (spear) to defeat the demon Soorapadman.

The name ''Thaipusam'' comes from the Tamil month ''Thai'' (January-February) and the star ''Pusam'' (Pushya), which is at its highest point during the festival.

2️⃣ Devotees seek blessings, fulfill vows, and perform acts of devotion.

How Thaipusam is Celebrated

1️⃣ Kavadi Attam (Burden Dance): Devotees carry kavadis (decorated structures) as an act of devotion. Some pierce their skin with hooks or spears, believing it brings spiritual merit.

2️⃣ Processions: The most famous is at the Batu Caves in Malaysia, where thousands of devotees walk barefoot up 272 steps to the temple.

3️⃣ Fasting and Prayers: Many devotees fast and prepare with days of purification before the festival.
