Industry 4.0 refers to smart manufacturing and production – smart factories, in which intelligent and interconnected cyber-physical systems autonomously control physical processes and communicate and cooperate both with each other and with humans, thanks to such technologies as the IoT and its sensors and controls embedded in physical devices.

The Internet of Things (IoT) enabling new forms of communication between people and things, and between things themselves. It allows sensing and controlled remotely across the network infrastructure, creating opportunities for more direct integration between the physical world and computer-based systems, and resulting in improved efficiency, accuracy and economic benefit. Hence, IoT enables a huge variety of new business possibilities by connecting sensors, identification tags, actors or meters to the internet. Many of these devices use batteries or energy harvesters as a power supply. In these cases, wireless connectivity plays a key role in the transmission of information from and to the internet. Designers of IoT systems or elements have to choose the technology that fits best the given requirements, to select appropriate IC devices, to implement the hardware including the embedded system, sensors, RF circuit and the system integration.
Smart Manufacturing (Industry 4.0)
The evolvement of industry has taken place into smart manufacturing or also known as industry 4.0. This 4th industrial revolution used to refer to capability of production facilities to autonomously perform task and control the process flow. It represents human-machine interaction, the next generation of robotics in advanced manufacturing - those that are interconnected and collaborative. The 4th industrial revolution is the action of the physical world becoming a type of information system through sensors and actuators embedded in physical objects and linked through networks.
