Advice from an old electronics engineer - Utsource Holding Company Limited

Advice from an old electronics engineer

31-Oct-2025

I've been an electronics engineer for over ten years now, and I haven't achieved much. Looking around, I haven't seen many successful people! Reflecting on my engineering career, I have many feelings and would like to share some heartfelt words, hoping to remind my juniors that I hope they will be better than us!

[1] Plan your path carefully, don't just follow your feelings!
Most people don't aspire to become academicians or professors; they simply want a comfortable and enjoyable life. Therefore, it's crucial to carefully plan your career path. Start with a particular industry, gradually gain a deeper understanding of it, and avoid frequent job hopping, especially not for a small salary increase. In the long run, that small amount of money is insignificant. Once you have several years of experience in an industry, money will no longer be a problem. Frequent job hopping is not a good strategy; in the end, you won't have a thorough understanding of any industry and will always be a novice!

[2] You can do technical work, but don't become obsessed with it.
Never focus solely on technical research! Putting too much pressure on yourself, if you focus all your energy on this, you're destined to become a character like Kong Yiji! Know when to stop, because technology is only one pillar of your future career, and not even the biggest one, unless you only want to be an engineer until you're old!

[3] Don't strive to be a technical expert, strive to be a well-rounded individual!
In a company, we often look down on someone, saying, "He doesn't know anything, why does he get so much money, why does he get promoted!" This is a common, typical, and pedantic view of engineers.
Is 8051 really that great? He must have had the ability to get promoted, and it's an ability you don't have. Think about it, the boss has been in business for so many years, is his experience less than yours, a newbie? He might be good at management, good at understanding the boss's intentions, good at departmental coordination, etc. Therefore, you must cultivate your multifaceted abilities, including management, interpersonal skills, the ability to read people, problem-solving skills, etc. To become a well-rounded individual, you will have a bright future; otherwise, you'll only be able to hide in a corner looking at an oscilloscope!
Skills beyond technology are the more important abilities! From ancient times to the present, in the US and Japan, this has always been true!

[4] Make friends from all walks of life!
Don't just associate with engineers, thinking you have common ground. It's more important to associate with other types of people. If you aspire to be a boss or senior manager someday, you'll be dealing with these people every day. Understand their experiences, thinking habits, hobbies, and problem-solving methods. Learn about phenomena and problems in all corners of society. This is a huge asset for future development. Without it, you'll be clumsy, stumble, encounter numerous difficulties, pay a lot of tuition, and greatly reduce your chances of success!

[5] Knowledge doesn't have to be specialized, but it must be broad!
Read books on other subjects, such as finance, accounting, import/export, taxation, and law, to accumulate knowledge for the future. This will be more useful later and save you a lot of tuition fees!

[6] Seize the opportunity to transition to technical management or marketing!
To have a promising future, you can't just stay in development. At the appropriate time, you should transition to management or sales. This will lead to a brighter future. Your previous technical experience won't be wasted; you'll still need it later. Management can cultivate leadership skills, sales can cultivate market awareness and thinking, and at the same time, it can build a vast network of contacts for future development! This is arguably the true pillar of one's future!

[7] Gradually overcome your psychological weaknesses and character flaws!
Suspicion, sensitivity, naivety (in a negative sense, not endearing), indecisiveness, timidity, overthinking, being too thin-skinned, not being ruthless enough, dogmatic thinking. These common character weaknesses among engineers must be changed! Is it difficult? Just thinking about it in bed is impossible; go help a friend run a street stall for a month, and you're guaranteed to see results. Go and practice, don't just think about it! Without overcoming these shortcomings, nothing is possible, not even being a good project manager—even if you have good technical skills!

[8]Prepare for the future while working! Build your own work environment! Set up a work environment for yourself as early as possible, equip yourself with a computer, oscilloscope (you can buy a second-hand one), emulator, programmer, etc. Take on some freelance work in your spare time. On the one hand, get in touch with the market and develop a market sense, and on the other hand, accumulate funds. More importantly, prepare your own products. I am a tech person and I don't have money, I only have technology. The representative of technology is not academic qualifications and certificates, but products. If you have decent products, you can transfer technology or cooperate with others to start a business! Prepare your things first and wait for opportunities, otherwise, you will not be able to seize the opportunities!

[9] Learn to promote yourself well!
Not only do you need to be capable, but you also need to be able to speak and write. It is very necessary to make good use of every opportunity to promote yourself and establish your own brand image! You need to create conditions for others to know you, otherwise how will the boss know that you are capable? How will outside investors believe you? Promote yourself early, and opportunities will naturally come to you! Creating a personal homepage is a good idea! In particular, cultivate your reputation in the industry. With a reputation, high-salary opportunities are a given, and more importantly, there are opportunities for cooperation.

[10] Strike when the iron is hot! There's never a 100% guarantee of success! If the conditions are right, be bold and go for it, forge your own path, don't hesitate, don't waver. Even if you succeed, you won't succeed, but at least you'll gain experience for the next attempt. You'll never amount to anything if you don't try, and success inevitably involves experiencing failure. No pain, no gain; no one succeeds easily.
