Top 8 Yong Peng Famous Local Food

Yong Peng is a small yet beautiful township in Batu Pahat District of Johor Bahru.

Most of the residents are Chinese, originated from southern part of China and hence, Mandarin is the main language here.

Due to the migration, lots of authentic Foochow style delicacies are introduced.

Besides Chinese cuisines, there are many Indian and Malay food stalls offering delightful traditional dishes.

With lots of local delicacies and western cuisines offered, Yong Peng is truly a paradise to food hunters.

And in today’s post, I’m going to share with you the best food in Yong Peng, Johor. Check it out!
 

1. Yong Peng Duck Noodles

The owner of Yong Peng Duck Noodles (also called Gerai Mee Daging Itik Yong Peng), Mr.Wong Ah Sing began the business with his wife more than 35 years ago. It is a best duck noodles in Yong Peng, Johor.

The Hokkien-style “Braised Duck” served here have thick herbal gravy and is their signature dish. The braised duck has a strong aroma and is darker than the Teochew-style Braised Duck.

Their “Braised Ducks” are cooked based on their own private recipe. In order to bring out a unique exotic taste, over 20 ingredients of Chinese herbs and spices are mixed in specific amounts to braise the ducks for at least 3 hours.

The ducks are handpicked 70-day-old Tsaiya ducks that weigh about 3 kg. The meat is firm at first and becomes succulent after the braising. You can add braised egg or dried bean curd along with rice or noodles to complete a hearty meal.

2. Maxim Snack Shoppe

It is a good place in Yong Peng and most visited by local people to have a tea break in the afternoon . The shop is decorated with various alarm and artwork. All are owner’s private collection.

The tables and chairs are all high foot. There are surely giving you good feeling for tea break.

The shop offers several delicious pastries, kaya puff, curry puff, taro cake, fried triangle taro cake, Siew Pau, buns and Ang Ku Kuih.

3. Kedai Makan Ah Poh

Serving laksa for over 50 years, Ah Poh was rated 5 stars by SinChew Newspaper for its cleanness, customer servies, food prices and food taste.

Laksa at Ah Poh has strong coconut aroma as the broth is cooked from fresh coconut milk and other ingredients. They use only Foochow noodles and local mihun to serve their customers and this adds to the uniqueness of their laksa.

4. Restoran Hock Swee Hin

Clean, well-maintained and situated opposite to the police station, Restaurant Hock Swee Hin is a Chinese Restaurant that focuses on serving Foochow delicacies which has a lighter taste.
 

The menu offers Foochow noodles and Foochow soup that come along in different version.

Here, Foochow fish ball noodles stand out proudly among all the Foochow dishes. Made by hands, the soft and chewy fish balls have tender pork filing. It’s perfect to savour the silky noodles together with Foochow fish balls.

5. Sunroast

Located near to North South Highway, Sunroast serves a favourite stop for those who drive between JB and KL. The restaurant looks simple from outside but its interior is clean and spacious.

Roast Chicken Char Siew is highly recommended by their chef as well as the patrons. Cut into small slices, the char siew is served together with silky noodles. The meat may look blackened but this proves that it is well roasted and definitely has a good taste.

6. Or Hwu Restaurant

Famed for serving Foochow cuisines, Or Hwu Restarant has gained a high reputation among the locals due to its delightful dishes and good services. With extremely large banners, the restaurant can be located easily.

Red Rice Wine Chicken, Foochow pork balls, Foochow fried noodles, Foochow fish ball soup and fried sweet potato leaves are some of the restaurant’s highlight.

If you have no idea what to eat, their waiters are on hand to recommend you dishes according to your preferences.

7. Kedai Membuat Kuih-Muih Eng Hin

Eng Hin is one of the oldest bakeries in Yong Peng. It sells only Kompia, one of the most popular Foochow food originated from China.

Kompia is a snack that normally pairs with Chinese Tea but some people also have Kompia as their daily breakfast. It is chewy and makes you crave for more.

Made by flour, sugar and lard, it is moulded into round shape and later topped with sesame seeds. Some are plain kompia and others have meat or peanuts filings.

8. Bebola Ikan Anthony Fish Ball

Bebola Ikan is a small restaurant which can be accessed easily due to its strategic location at the corner of shop lot with big red banners.

Fish balls are Bebola Ikan’s highlight. The restaurant serves bouncy and firm fish balls that are dropped in noodle soup, broth or served together with dry noodles.

Strongly emphasises on authenticity and freshness of fish balls, they make fresh fish balls every day. Less sauces and seasoning are added to focus more on the natural flavours of food.
