The Proton Persona is expected to be discontinued in 2026, following its absence from Proton’s future product plans revealed at the Proton Tech Showcase. The sedan, which debuted in 2016, received a facelift in 2019 and its last update in 2021.
Its sibling model, the Proton Iriz, also ended production, signalling the end of the Campro VVT era. The Persona was missing from key development roadmaps presented by Proton, including the AMA platform plan, the X/S series roadmap, and the GMA model strategy.
Proton has confirmed that all Campro VVT engines will be replaced by the new i-GT engine family by 2026. With the Persona still using the 1.6L VVT engine, the model has no future powertrain, leaving it with no clear pathway to continue.
The discontinuation of the Persona will create a gap between the A-segment Saga and the C-segment S70, affecting both size and pricing. To fill this gap, rumours suggest Proton may introduce a more affordable S70 variant equipped with a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine. This aligns with its donor model, the Geely Emgrand, which uses a similar engine in other markets.
Proton is also exploring a CVT with torque converter, a setup that could suit the rumoured budget S70 variant more than the Saga.
With these developments, the Persona nameplate is likely to be retired—either temporarily or for the foreseeable future—as Proton reshapes its sedan lineup for the next generation.
