In a major step towards improving road safety and supporting environmental sustainability, Proton has officially introduced the Proton Xchange Programme. This initiative is designed to encourage owners of vehicles aged 15 years or older to trade in their unroadworthy cars in exchange for brand-new, safer, and eco-friendly Proton models.

The programme was launched during an event at the Proton Centre of Excellence in Subang Jaya, officiated by Transport Minister YB Anthony Loke Siew Fook. More than just a vehicle replacement scheme, the Proton Xchange Programme reflects the brand’s commitment to helping Malaysia transition to greener mobility solutions.



One of the standout features of the programme is its openness to all car brands, meaning any qualifying old vehicle, regardless of make, can be exchanged. The initiative is carried out in partnership with Car Medic Sdn Bhd, a licensed vehicle treatment facility recognised by the Department of Environment (DOE).

To incentivise participation, Proton is offering a RM2,000 rebate (overtrade support) for every successful trade-in under the programme. Additionally, buyers will receive free road tax for the first year upon registering their new Proton vehicle. The programme also covers Proton’s upcoming electric vehicle (EV), the e.MAS 7, and will run until the end of December 2025. A total of RM4.8 million has been allocated for the pilot phase.



To qualify, participants must present proof of ownership of their old vehicle and complete the deregistration process through the Road Transport Department (JPJ). Required documents include the Vehicle Ownership Certificate (VOC), JPJK1KD form, and the Certificate of Destruction (COD) provided by Car Medic.

Car Medic will further streamline the process by offering door-to-door vehicle pickup and towing, as well as handling all necessary documentation. Their digital platform also enables on-site e-Deregistration for MyKad holders in selected regions and supports bulk submissions for vehicle fleets.



The initiative is also backed by the Ministry of Transport, which has approved a first-year road tax exemption for vehicles purchased through the programme. “We hope other car brands will follow Proton’s example by putting safety and sustainability first,” said YB Anthony Loke, applauding Proton’s leadership.

With a diverse line-up that includes internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, mild hybrids, and electric vehicles (EVs), Proton is uniquely positioned to lead this transformation in the automotive sector. The Proton Xchange Programme is a clear example of how corporate responsibility can go hand in hand with customer benefit.
