Hyundai-Sime Darby Motors (HSDM) has collaborated with Kraftangan Malaysia, an agency under the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, to create special Songket Editions of the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 electric vehicles. This project celebrates 67 years of Malaysia's independence.

For those who may not know, songket is a traditional fabric that is hand-woven using real gold leaves and gold or silver threads. It is often associated with royalty and people of high social status.

The vehicles feature a stunning songket design on the bonnets, boot lids, sides, and roofs, showcasing traditional craftsmanship recognized by UNESCO for its cultural significance. HSDM mentions that the design, called Tampuk Manggis, is inspired by the mangosteen fruit and is commonly used in songket weaving patterns and textiles.



“This design uses a grid pattern, similar to pixels, to create a smooth square shape. It represents how design has evolved, connecting different generations to the future. The lines at the ends of the design’s petals create six squares, representing beauty, uniqueness, stability, strength, sophistication, and resilience,” said Joey Lin, the managing director of HSDM.

The Ioniq 6 Songket Edition was first unveiled on HSDM’s Facebook page on Malaysia Day. Meanwhile, the Ioniq 5 Songket Edition was used as the Official Car for the International Tourism and Cultures Exhibition & Conference (INTAC) 2024, held at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur last weekend.

Both Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 have won multiple awards, including World EV of the Year, World Car Design of the Year, and overall World Car of the Year for 2022 and 2023. Additionally, the Ioniq 5 N, which was recently shown in Malaysia, has been named the 2024 World Performance Car of the Year.
