Load-Side Reactor for VSD Protection | Motor Insulation Defense by EKG

In the 2026 industrial landscape of Kuala Lumpur, Load-Side Reactors (also known as Output Reactors) are the essential "shock absorbers" installed between your Variable Speed Drive (VSD) and the motor. While VSDs are brilliant for energy saving, their high-speed electronic switching creates "Voltage Spikes" that can travel down the cable and hammer your motor's insulation. If your AHU or pump motor is located more than 30 meters from the VSD, a Load-Side Reactor is mandatory to prevent premature winding burnout.

1. The Physics of the "Reflected Wave"

VSDs use Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) to control motor speed. This creates a specific electrical phenomenon:

  • The dV/dt Spike: The "Rise Time" of the voltage pulse is incredibly fast. This creates a "Pressure Wave" of electricity.

  • The Reflected Wave Effect: In long cable runs, this wave hits the motor terminals and "bounces" back. When the reflected wave meets the next incoming wave, they combine, creating a voltage peak up to 2.5 times the rated voltage (e.g., a 415V system seeing spikes over 1000V).

  • Corona Discharge: These high-voltage spikes punch through the thin enamel coating on your motor's copper windings. This creates "Micro-Arcs" that slowly carbonize the insulation until the motor "Shorts to Ground."
