Sensible Heat Recovery Solutions | High-Efficiency HRV by EKG (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd

In the tropical climate of Malaysia, the most significant energy "drain" on an HVAC system is the intake of hot, 32°C outdoor air. Sensible Heat Recovery is a mechanical process that transfers only the "dry" temperature (sensible heat) from the building’s stale 24°C exhaust air to the incoming fresh air. By pre-cooling the intake air before it reaches your cooling coils, you can reduce the thermal load on your chillers by up to 25%, ensuring compliance with the 2026 Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act (EECA).

At EKG M&E, we specialize in high-performance Heat Recovery Ventilation (HRV) solutions using fixed-plate and run-around coil technologies to maximize your "coolth" recovery.


1. Cross-Flow and Counterflow Exchange

The efficiency of a sensible heat recovery solution depends on the flow geometry within the exchange core. We select the configuration based on your facility's specific space and efficiency targets:

  • Cross-Flow Heat Exchangers: The two air streams travel at 90° to each other. These units are compact and cost-effective, typically offering a sensible recovery efficiency of 50% to 65%.

  • Counterflow Heat Exchangers: The air streams travel in opposite directions for a longer duration. This maximizes the temperature transfer, often achieving efficiencies of 75% to 85%, making them the gold standard for Grade-A offices and data centers.

  • Zero Cross-Contamination: Because the plates are physically sealed (Aluminum or Polymer), there is no mixing of air. This makes sensible recovery ideal for laboratories and hospitals where odor or pathogen transfer must be zero.


2. VFD-Optimized Thermal Balancing

To reach the rated efficiency of a sensible heat recovery core, the mass flow of the supply and exhaust air must be perfectly balanced. We utilize Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) to manage this fluid dynamics challenge:

  • The Cube Law Efficiency: We program the VFD to modulate fan speeds based on real-time demand. According to the Cube Law, reducing the fan speed by just 20% to match lower occupancy can cut the ventilation power draw by nearly 50%.

  • Static Pressure Compensation: As MERV 13 filters begin to load with dust, the VFD automatically increases the fan's "static lift" to maintain the mandated 10 l/s per person fresh air rate.

  • Bypass Control for Free Cooling: During early Malaysian mornings when outdoor temperatures drop, the VFD-controlled dampers bypass the heat exchanger, providing 100% fresh air at zero cooling cost.


3. Run-Around Coil Systems (Split-Stream Recovery)

In some industrial facilities, the fresh air intake and the exhaust vent are located on opposite sides of the building. In these cases, we implement a Run-Around Coil sensible recovery system:

  • Hydronic Thermal Bridge: We install two heat exchange coils connected by a pumped water/glycol loop. The exhaust air cools the water, which is then pumped to the intake coil to pre-cool the outdoor air.

  • Geographical Flexibility: This allows for sensible heat recovery even when ductwork cannot be intersected, making it an ideal Retrofit solution for older Malaysian factories.

  • Pump VFD Integration: We apply VFDs to the circulation pumps to ensure the water flow rate matches the thermal exchange requirements, preventing energy waste in the hydronic loop.


4. Mechanical Health: FFT Vibration Analysis

High-efficiency HRV units house high-static fans that must operate 24/7. To ensure your energy savings aren't interrupted by a mechanical seizure, we employ Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) Analysis:

  • Vibration Fingerprinting: We monitor the vibration spectrum of the motors. We can detect shaft misalignment or bearing degradation months before a failure occurs, ensuring 100% uptime for your cooling recovery.
