Counterflow Heat Recovery Units | High-Efficiency Thermal Exchange

In the hierarchy of Heat Recovery Ventilation (HRV), Counterflow Heat Recovery Units represent the peak of sensible energy recovery. Unlike standard cross-flow units where air streams pass at a 90-degree angle, counterflow technology allows the incoming fresh air and outgoing exhaust air to flow parallel to each other in opposite directions for a longer duration.

1. The Physics of Counterflow Exchange

The primary advantage of a counterflow core is the extended heat transfer surface. Because the two air streams travel the full length of the heat exchanger plates in opposition, the temperature gradient is maintained throughout the entire process.

  • Maximum Temperature Lift: In a typical 32°C Kuala Lumpur afternoon, a counterflow unit can pre-cool incoming fresh air much closer to the indoor exhaust temperature (e.g., 24°C) than a cross-flow unit can. This drastically reduces the cooling load on your main Chiller or VRV system.

  • Zero Air Mixing: The air streams are separated by ultra-thin, high-conductivity polymer or aluminum plates. This ensures that the fresh air remains 100% pure and uncontaminated by office odors or CO2, complying with the 2026 DOSH IAQ mandates.

  • Condensation Management: Because counterflow units are so efficient at cooling incoming air, they produce significant condensation. We engineer specialized drain pans and anti-clogging traps to handle this moisture, preventing mold and "bio-slime" growth.


2. VFD-Controlled Airflow Balancing
