Computer Room Air Conditioning (CRAC) by EKG M&E Sdn Bhd
In the high-density data hubs of Kuala Lumpur, a Computer Room Air Conditioner (CRAC) is the heart of the facility’s thermal management. Unlike a standard commercial air conditioner that cycles on and off based on human comfort, a CRAC unit is a precision instrument designed for 24/7/365 operation. It maintains the stringent temperature, humidity, and air filtration levels required to prevent server "thermal throttling" and hardware failure.
EKG M&E Sdn Bhd provides specialized EPCC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction, and Commissioning) for CRAC systems, ensuring your data center meets TIA-942 or Uptime Institute Tier standards.
1. How a CRAC System Works
A CRAC unit typically uses a Direct Expansion (DX) refrigeration cycle. It draws hot air from the server racks (usually through the top of the unit), cools it over a refrigerant coil, and discharges the chilled air into a pressurized plenum—often beneath a Raised Access Floor.
-
Sensible Heat Focus: Servers produce almost exclusively "sensible" heat (dry heat). CRAC units are engineered with high-surface-area coils to maximize sensible cooling while minimizing unnecessary dehumidification.
-
Underfloor Distribution: Cold air is forced through perforated floor tiles located in the "Cold Aisle," ensuring the densest part of the server rack receives the most cooling.
2. CRAC vs. CRAH (Chilled Air Handler)
As an HVAC and Clean Air Specialist, we help you choose the right architecture based on your facility's scale:
| Feature | CRAC (Direct Expansion) | CRAH (Chilled Water) |
| Cooling Medium | Refrigerant (R410A/R32). | Chilled Water from a Central Chiller. |
| Capacity | Best for small to mid-sized rooms. | Best for large-scale enterprise data centers. |
| Complexity | Simple standalone installation. | Requires extensive piping and pump logic. |
| Efficiency | Moderate. | High (when paired with a high-efficiency chiller). |
3. Precision Control & VFD Integration
In Malaysia’s fluctuating climate, "Static" cooling is inefficient. We utilize Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) and Electronically Commutated (EC) Fans to turn the CRAC into a "Smart" system:
-
Dynamic Airflow: The VFD adjusts the fan speed in real-time based on the pressure in the underfloor plenum. If a server rack is removed or added, the system adapts instantly.
-
Inverter Compressors: Instead of the high-wear "On/Off" cycle of standard compressors, VFD-driven compressors modulate their speed to match the IT load perfectly, reducing energy consumption by up to 30%.
-
Dehumidification Logic: During KL’s rainy seasons, the CRAC can trigger a "Reheat" cycle to strip moisture from the air without over-cooling the room, preventing condensation on sensitive electronics.
4. Reliability and "N+1" Redundancy
In a server environment, a 15-minute cooling failure can lead to a total system meltdown. We design for high availability:
-
N+1 or 2N Redundancy: We ensure that if one CRAC unit goes down for maintenance or fails, the remaining units have the combined capacity to carry the full thermal load.
-
Vibration Health Monitoring: We perform Vibration Analysis on the heavy-duty blower fans. Identifying a bearing defect early allows for scheduled maintenance during low-traffic windows rather than an emergency midnight repair.
-
Leak Detection: Every EKG-installed CRAC includes a water leak detection cable around the base to alert the BMS (Building Management System) immediately if a condensate drain clogs.
Why Choose EKG M&E Sdn Bhd?
-
Turnkey MEP Execution: We don't just install the CRAC; we manage the Raised Floor installation, the Fire Suppression (FM200/Novec) interlocks, and the electrical sub-panels.
-
34-Year Legacy in KL: We understand the local grid stability and humidity challenges unique to the Klang Valley.
-
Energy PUE Optimization: We help you lower your Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) score, making your data center more sustainable and cost-effective.
