What Is a Slip Ring Motor?
A Slip Ring Motor, also known as a Wound Rotor Induction Motor, is a type of AC motor that uses slip rings and external resistors to control its starting torque and speed. It is widely used in industries that require high starting torque and smooth speed control, such as cranes, mills, and conveyors.

How Does a Slip Ring Motor Work?
When AC power is supplied to the stator, it creates a rotating magnetic field. This field induces current in the rotor windings, generating torque. By connecting external resistance through the slip rings, the rotor current and torque can be controlled. Once the motor reaches the desired speed, the resistance is short-circuited, and the motor runs similarly to a squirrel cage motor.
