Signs of Labor in the Third Trimester: A Complete Guide for New Moms

Updated: 2025-09-07 · Reading time: ~6 mins · Labor preparation guide

In the third trimester (after 37 weeks), one of the biggest concerns for moms-to-be is: “How will I know it’s time to give birth?” The body usually sends several signals before labor begins. Understanding these signs can help new moms prepare in advance and avoid being caught off guard.

Common signs of labor

  • Bloody show: Pinkish or blood-tinged mucus discharge as the cervix begins to dilate.
  • Regular contractions: Transition from irregular tightening to every 5–10 minutes with increasing intensity and back or abdominal pain.
  • Water breaking: Clear or pale-yellow fluid leakage. If it happens, head to the hospital immediately.
  • Changes in fetal movement: Movement patterns may shift before labor but should remain consistent. Any abnormalities need prompt attention.
  • Cervical changes: During checkups, doctors may note that the cervix is softening, thinning, and dilating.

When to seek immediate medical help

  • If amniotic fluid appears greenish or cloudy, it may signal fetal distress.
  • Heavy bleeding beyond normal “bloody show” could indicate placental abruption.
  • Sudden decrease or absence of fetal movement.
  • Strong contractions without cervical dilation.

Hospital bag & mental preparation

  • Hospital bag: Pack essentials early—ID documents, clothes, maternity pads, and baby items (diapers, swaddle, clothes).
  • Mental preparation: Practice breathing techniques, stay calm, and follow medical guidance.
  • Partner support: A husband or family member’s presence can provide emotional reassurance and confidence.

‍ Doctor’s note

Not all signs mean immediate labor. For example, bloody show and false contractions may occur days before true labor begins. When in doubt, always go to the hospital for professional evaluation.
